30th Aug 2008-Bumping into Metal heads

This post is historic!

It is the first ever post I am writing on this blog in the “Metal Head Diary” format.Last night I decided that I am not going to give up blogging after all.Yes,I know there are enough blogs out there maintained by people who “assume” they know what they are talking about and suggesting you what and what not to listen to,with two lines of content compressed between 8 ad blocks.I decided I should do something different-so here’s the diary. The idea is to focus on the fans-the core of not only heavy metal but any form of art.Though these articles will be presented in the form of a story or personal experiences-my intention is to reveal and discuss the “family” that is metal.

Last evening I bumped into a metal head.I bought the new Motorhead album and a T-Shirt ( only 20$,sweet deal eh?) and was heading to the bus-stop to get the bus to the campus. There was this long-haired guy, wearing a Maiden T-Shirt and listening to music.I remembered him instantly. He was the same guy whose Zeppelin T-Shirt I complimented a few days before.

I was so bored and none of my new friends were around,so I decided to start a conversation with him.Iron Maiden seemed like a good topic. But then I decided that I should flash out my newly bought album so he would notice it.And he did!Because right after I put the CD back into the bag he asked “So,you listen to a lot of Motorhead?”.

And we spoke a lot.A lot!Everything from up coming Opeth gigs to Varg Vikerenes.Even when we were in the bus we were talking about what instruments we play and other bands we believed the other didn’t know.He also had a copy of “Lords of Chaos-the bloody rise of Norwegian Black Metal” and was telling me how awesome it was for him to find that copy in some book store in the Twin Cities.

3 minutes later,we were in the bus as our conversations extended and spread over Ihsahn and pirate metal. There was another dude in the back in a Symphony X T-shirt listening to some music and attempting double bass drumming. That made me think.Metalheads represents where ever they go.It may not simply be a black Slayer T-Shirt or a Maiden T-Shirt,they have other ways of representing.A drummer plays air drum,a guitarist plays air guitar.I was honestly amazed to realise that a simple music genre can do so much to idividuals.Remember that Rob Zombie quote from “Metal:A headbanger’s journey”?

“Metalheads look like metalheads!”

That’s so fucking true man! They look like they like metal, and if they realise that you are no different than them, they’ll step upto you and start talking about what you like most-”Metal”.

If you see someone wearing a Beetles T-Shirt,chances are thay might be a die hard Beetles fan or someone who just “likes” them. But if you see a dude wearing a “Slayer” T-Shirt,I can assure you they at least got knocked and nose bled thrice in some mosh pit or other. You also know they are wearing it because they just can’t get enough of Slayer and Slayer play a significant role in their sorry lives.

I also remember meeting another guy at a floor meeting-believe me nothing feels more awesome than seeing a guy wearing an Amon Amarth T-Shirt when everyone is wearing Duran Duran T-Shirts eh Steve? How I bumped into my room mate was pretty “metal” too.I see a guy wearing a metal T-Shirt and I walk to him and ask “you like this music pal?”And he goes “Hell Yeah! You are?” And I go” Mithila” and he goes “Awesomeness I am your room mate!”

This is simply awesome-I was so glad to realise that I am part of tribe that is spread throughout the enitre fucking world-and where ever I go I know someone over there.

It’s like stepping into the busiest air port on Earth and seeing someone holding a board with your name on it.You leave Colombo and step in Minnesota 27 hours later and you see a guy wearing a Maiden T-Shirt and you are like “I know him!”.
