Metal Video of the Week-Black Sabbath by Black Sabbath

Phew!It took me some time to get this blog up and running.To be honest,there was a certain point when I thought “Look,this site is going no where go get a job!” But here you are,reading my blog and aren’t you glad I didn’t just quit!I hate long,never ending bull crap just as much as you do,but just to let you know and have a go at a few people I know,please tolerate this.While I was busy laying out the blueprints to get this site running and trying to contact my I.T friends to get the job done,I just kept a poll running on how my site was going.Some voted positively,you rock \m/ But some retroblogger voted on this site sucks.Well,I have one word for you,just one word, “DORK”!!!

Anyway here’s my first ever post on this “Thursday’s special edition-Metal video of the Week”.I was not in a position to run a poll to get your votes on this,so I decided to pick the song myself.And I’m damn sure that you’ll agree with me on my pick.Is there any better song to start a segment like this than Black Sabbath by Black Sabbath?

Though it’ll always be a question,I personally believe that Black Sabbath were the first ever Heavy Metal band to bring the term into use and of course the significantly different element of music.From Manson’s Modern Gothic to Slayer’s Thrash to Norwegian Black Metal, it all cropped up from Sabbath.Of course Tony Iommi didn’t use the tremolo picking techniques widely used by the bands of the Black Metal scene,but hell!He brought the “Tritone” or “Dialbolous in Musica” back into play after it was banned in the middle ages for its obvious Satanic and evil element.Can you imagine it?After the middle ages!!!After all if Slayer could do one whole album by the name of “Diabolous in musica” (1998) there’s no second word about it.I mean Slayer ain’t just any band,it’s SLA-bloody-YER!!!

The story behind Black Sabbath(the song) is equally mysterious as many of you may have seen or heard,most probably through popular VH1 Rock Docs like Heavy:The Story of Metal.I’ve never been very fond of seeing metal associated with Popular Pop Culture Hippies and names like VH1.But that was a pretty descent documentary.And what’s more “Black Sabbath” (the song) still scares the crap out of me and to be honest I’d think twice before listening to that song in the middle of a night.To all of you who know the story,here’s it again and to all of you who ain’t got no friggin’ idea who Sabbath are I got one word for ya!“DORKS!!!” And if by any chance you think you are a metal head but got no idea about this song,mark my word,”You are not a metal head,you are a DORK!!!

Well,basically the song is about the fear going through the head,the veins and basically the whole body of the “Protagonist” or in other words “Satan’s chosen one” during the Apocalypse.The Augmented Fourth interval(thus creating “Diabolous in Musica” or “The Devil in music”) creates the perfect atmosphere to suit the mood and the tone of the song’s theme.Seriously,you got to have a lot of balls to be able to listen to this song in the night without wetting your pants!

This song resulted in shrouding the band in controversy for being Satanic.The band has always denied this and by my books this too falls under the category of the same bull crap as “Led Zeppelin’s music having a Satanic message that can be only heard by playing their songs backwards”.I mean seriously,there’s no wonder if someone went crazy trying to listen to a Zeppelin song backwards.Because;

(a)Songs are supposed to be listened the way they appear in records or at least forwards.It should surely sound like utter crap to listen to a song backwards.

(b)You yourself were crazy in the first place if you thought it was a very bright idea to listen to a song backwards!!!(DORK!!!)

(c)These are all shitty stories made up by people who can’t bare to see,hear or understand Heavy Music.We,metal heads,should not be bothered.Why?Yeah you got that one right,they are “DORKS”!!!

The main inspiration for the song is said to have been provided by a post-nightmare experience of Geezer Butler(Bass).During the early days of the band,when they were called Earth,Geezer is said to have had painted the walls in his apartment black and had placed some inverted crucifixes on the walls.And later,Geezer supposedly was very fascinated by a book of witchcraft Ozzy brought. One night after reading this book,Geezer fell asleep and woke up only to see a black figure staring at him.This experience was what inspired Ozzy to write the lyrics of Black Sabbath.To read the full lyrics of the song click here.

There you have it.”Black Sabbath” by “Black Sabbath”.A demo version of “Black Sabbath” can be heard on Ozzy Osbourne compilation “The Ozzman Cometh” which features an additional verse.This is considered to be the earliest recording of Sabbath open to the public.

The video will also be featured on the homepage for one whole week.As you watch it don’t forget to vote for your favourite song on the “Metal Video of the Week” poll,to get your favourite video on this site next week.
